Life was a struggle in the Philippines. The country has a beautiful climate and agriculture drives the economy. The country is rich in history and made Rotary history as the first country to organize an effort to eliminate polio. On a sunny Sunday afternoon on September 29, 1979 the first 100 children received the first life saving Sabin polio Vaccine. This was Rotary’s first Health, Hunger and Humanity grant. This grant signed by the Minister of Health and Rotary International with the goal of immunizing 6 million children over five year with a total grant of US$760,000.00. This led to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative created in 1988. This beautiful country is now “POLIO FREE”. Those 9 years were life changing for the country. As we walk around the world we can celebrate the joy of being a Rotarian.
